Subtropical Storm Ernesto Forms Over Atlantic

As it's still very far away, it's too early to tell how the storm could affect the Hawaiian Islands, but the current forecast path takes it just to the south of the Big Island sometime Wednesday.

As of 5 a.m. today, Tropical Storm Lane was 2,185 miles east-southeast of Hilo. Additional strengthening is possible this week. The system is expected to become a post-tropical cyclone Thursday night or early Friday.

The system is no threat to the US, forming in a similar place in the Central Atlantic Ocean as its predecessor Tropical Storm Debby.

The latest forecast from the U.S. National Hurricane Center said, "At 500 AM AST [0900 UTC], the center of Subtropical Depression Five was located near latitude 37.6 North, longitude 45.6 West". Dvorak estimates range from 30 to 40 kt, and with the increased organization since the last advisory, the initial wind speed is set to 35 kt. Dust from the Sahara Desert across much of the Atlantic and Caribbean as well as stronger-than-usual wind shear have prevented major development thus far this season.
