Let's try to navigate through this Beltway Hall of Mirrors.

In at least three voluntary interviews with investigators that totaled 30 hours over the past nine months, Mr. McGahn described the president's furor toward the Russian Federation investigation and the ways in which he urged Mr. McGahn to respond to it.

The newspaper said Mr. McGahn was also centrally involved in Mr. Trump's attempts to fire the special counsel, Robert Mueller, which investigators might not have discovered without him.

Burck released a statement saying, "President Trump, through counsel, declined to assert any privilege over Mr. McGahn's testimony, so Mr. McGahn answered the Special Counsel team's questions fulsomely and honestly, as any person interviewed by federal investigators must".

President Donald Trump took to Twitter Sunday morning to hit back against a recent New York Times article about White House Counsel Don McGahn and continue his complaints about the ongoing Mueller probe.

Special counsel Robert Mueller is investigating whether President Trump's campaign team colluded with Russian Federation to influence the outcome of the presidential election. No Collusion, No Obstruction.

Trump's personal legal team has urged the special counsel to wrap up its investigations by the time of the mid-term elections this fall, and Trump has maintained his innocence through the duration of the inquiry, calling the Mueller investigation a "witch hunt".

McGahn agreed to cooperate with the investigation in part because Trump's first team of criminal lawyers agreed to cooperate fully with Mueller, stating they believed they could end the investigation quickly, as Trump had nothing to hide.

Donald Trump has a credibility problem, but so do the media.

Rudy Giuliani, who joined the president's outside legal team after Dowd resigned, told Reuters on Saturday that Trump's lawyers had been in contact with McGahn's counsel after he was interviewed and possessed "emails that say he provided nothing that was damaging or incriminating to the president".

"Tough as he was, Roy [Cohn] always had a lot of friends, and I'm not embarrassed to say I was one", Trump wrote in the Art of the Deal, as quoted Sunday by CNN host Jake Tapper.

McGahn became concerned that the President planned to set him up to be held responsible for any potential illegal incidents of obstruction, the Times reported, citing to people close to him.

News of McGahn's extensive cooperation with Mueller is likely to complicate the already-strained relationship between the two men.

According to Trump, the New York Times has been "fake news" since the day he announced that he was running for president. "So bad for America!"

"Study the late Joseph McCarthy, because we are now in period with Mueller and his gang that make Joseph McCarthy look like a baby!" he wrote in another tweet.

On Sunday, he compared Mueller with 1950s-era USA senator Joseph McCarthy, whose anti-Communist crusade eventually led to his censure by the Senate.

On Saturday, John Dean tweeted that McGahn is doing the right thing.
