Former chief rabbi warns of 'existential threat' to UK Jews

"We want to tackle anti-Semitism across society and of course we have had some examples of it in the party but we are being ruthless about dealing with it".

While he acknowledged the left of the party had control over Labour's machinery, he said its "paranoia" was preventing the party from dealing with issues which were doing "extraordinary harm" to its reputation.

"Not only will the anti-Semitism row rumble on", Wes Streeting told Sky News, "[but] the damage to the Labour Party and the confidence in the Labour Party amongst Britain's Jews will be exacerbated and I think Labour will face a political crisis when we should be holding the Conservatives to account".

"I just say to Lord Sacks "you've got it wrong, come and talk to us".

The moderate Labour MP said the NEC vote was "clear evidence" that Mr Corbyn and his team were in charge and the "spat" over Mr Willsman's comments had little or no impact on their support.

Lord Sacks a member of the House of Lords who is not affiliated with any party, insisted the Labour leader must "recant and repent" and that he risked engulfing the country "in the flames of hatred".

Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair has blamed Jeremy Corbyn's "visceral anti-Western position" for the antisemitism row now gripping the Labour party.

"When some try to force the Labour party into using as its litmus test a definition of anti-Semitism that goes far beyond anti-Jewish animus to include anti-Zionism, we must raise our voices and decry these efforts", members of the opposition Joint List wrote in a letter to the Guardian.

Suggestions that the Labour leadership has failed to crack down on anti-Semitic comments by members and activists and, in some cases, condoned their actions have dogged the party in recent years.

Mr Field is facing calls to stand in a by-election after resigning the whip, and is taking legal advice after party sources said it meant he had "automatically opted to resign from the Labour Party", which he disputes.

In a sign of widening splits in the party, shadow chancellor John McDonnell admitted he is "worried" about the prospect of a schism in Labour ranks.

Renewing her attack over the weekend, she claimed the party's leadership has a "hatred of Jews" and accused Mr Corbyn of allowing anti-Semitism to "run rife" on his watch.

McDonnell predicted all sides would be "satisfied" with the proposals agreed Tuesday. "And I believe this problem must be solved within the Labour Party now", Brown said.

Britain's former chief rabbi has warned that Jewish people are thinking about leaving the country because of anti-Semitism.

"I know of no other occasion in these 362 years when Jews - the majority of our community - are asking: 'Is this country safe to bring up our children?'".

A controversial ally of Jeremy Corbyn who blamed Jewish "Trump fanatics" for "making up" allegations of anti-Semitism in the party at a meeting attended by the Labour leader has been re-elected to the party's ruling body.

There had been a parliamentary meeting on the night before the vote, she said, which Labour were losing, but "Jeremy Corbyn didn't bother to come to the meeting".
