UEFA Nations League: Luis Enrique hails De Gea after victory over England

When England last faced Spain at Wembley in November 2016, during Southgate's four-game run as interim manager after Sam Allardyce's dismissal, it was an altogether different team that lined up for the hosts.

The FA said: "Luke Shaw remained at St. George's Park today for further rest and monitoring having sustained concussion against Spain yesterday".

Spain were fluid and fluent throughout their first match under Luis Enrique and, after their shock World Cup last-16 exit to hosts Russian Federation ended a tumultuous campaign, will go confidently into their next game against Croatia, though a late foul by substitute Danny Welbeck meant they will not do so on the back of a draw. "He's talking and seems fairly comfortable", Southgate said.

The second half was overshadowed by a nasty-looking injury sustained by England left back Luke Shaw who needed lengthy treatment after a clash of heads.

"They are a top, top side and I think for spells kept the ball incredibly well, pressed us and we didn't keep the ball in the early part of the game well enough".

"I'm a fighter, I'll be back soon", he wrote on social networks after the game in an attempt to reassure fans.

The second half got off to a sour start as Shaw had to be stretchered off after taking a knock to the head in a collision with Dani Carvajal.

Medics rushed onto the pitch to give Shaw, 23, oxygen and carry him off on a stretcher.

Shaw has been flying for United this season, earning him a call-up by Gareth Southgate and a first England start in three years against Spain on Saturday night.

Having got the assist to put England 1-0 up in the first half, Shaw's return to worldwide football had started brilliantly.

And Southgate concedes the duo may not be in his squad for Tuesday's friendly with Switzerland.

Left-back Chilwell replaces Shaw while forward Gray could replace United's Marcus Rashford who also picked up a knock against Spain.
