Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon has been traded to the Patriots

After initially saying they would cut Gordon on Monday, the Browns chose to take advantage of the market and find a trade partner.

As Rapoport revealed, the deal is for a conditional fifth-round pick, which can mean a few different things.

The Browns drafted Gordon in the second round of the 2012 supplemental draft.

The deal came together Monday, two days after the Browns reached a breaking point with Gordon, who has been suspended for much of his National Football League career. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Monday the trade was initially supposed to be for a sixth-round pick, but the Patriots do not have a sixth-round pick in next year's draft.

Gordon, 27, missed much of the offseason as he took time away from the team to deal with personal matters, but announced his return mid-August. He reportedly showed up late to the team's training facility Saturday and was suffering from a hamstring injury.

The Browns have been trying to trade Gordon this past weekend after they decided they would move on from him. Gordon's 2013 campaign was the stuff of legend, hauling in 87 catches for 1,646 yards (nine touchdowns), playing alongside a number of mediocre-at-best quarterbacks.

Gordon has played in just six games since, missing two entire seasons because of substance abuse issues.

Seemingly in a better place, Gordon returned to the field in Week 1 and caught a game-tying touchdown in Cleveland's eventual tie with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Additionally, Gordon was on the receiving end of five passes that went for gains of at least 20 yards and converted 12 first downs.
