Flake calls Trump's attack against Christine Blasey Ford 'appalling'

Reports say the FBI could wrap up the investigation as soon as Wednesday and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said he would hold a vote on Kavanaugh's confirmation this week.

And McConnell needs to make sure he has the votes of at least two of those three, assuming all Senate Democrats oppose Kavanaugh's nomination.

During a rally in MS on Tuesday night, Trump mocked California psychology professor Christine Blasey Ford, parodying tearful testimony last week in which she alleged that Kavanaugh held her down, put his hand over her mouth and tried to remove her clothing when they were in high school.

"What neighbourhood was it in?"

"We don't know how she knows Brett M. Kavanaugh; we don't know what house it took place in, " he said of Ford's allegation. I don't know. Upstairs, downstairs, where was it?

The audience laughed as the president said: "Thirty-six years ago this happened: I had one beer!"

"A man's life is shattered", he said of Kavanaugh after making fun of Ford's testimony.

"To discuss something this sensitive at a political rally is just not right", he said on NBC's "Today" show. "I wish he hadn't had done it", Sen.

Mr Judge has not appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee, but said in a statement: "I do not recall the party described in Dr Ford's letter".

Senators will then vote on whether to confirm Judge Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.

Mr. McConnell said the updated report will only be available to senators, as has been the practice for previous nominees.

The prosecutor joined a private meeting with all Senate Republicans on Thursday after the hearing, where she told the senators that after the eight hours of testimony she heard, she would not have prosecuted Kavanaugh for assault, according to two officials familiar with her remarks.

Democrats countered that brief delays in voting on Kavanaugh pale in comparison to Republicans refusing to consider former President Barack Obama's final Supreme Court nominee, Merrick Garland, for most of 2016.

Those GOP senators, along with Democrats Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota and Joe Manchin of West Virginia, have yet to declare how they will vote on Kavanaugh.

The attack quickly drew scorn from critics, who said such mockery was part of the reason survivors of sexual assault are afraid to go public.

Writing to the FBI, attorneys for Professor Christine Blasey Ford said it was "inconceivable" that the agency could conduct a thorough investigation without interviewing her.

As the president accused the Democrats of having been attempting to destroy Kavanaugh since "the very first second he was announced", the crowd broke into chants of support for the Supreme Court nominee.

But, he added, numerous other accusations endangering Kavanaugh's nomination amounted to "college kids acting like many college kids".

Another: When Trump complained on Twitter this summer about "many years of USA foolishness and stupidity, " Kilmeade made an issue of it on the show.

"'What neighborhood was it in?' I don't know". Opposition to Kavanaugh grew 4 percentage points after the hearing, apparently driven by people who previously were undecided.

In a Twitter post on Wednesday, Trump did not back away from his comments at the rally, instead attacking Kavanaugh's Democratic critics.

The president's controversial comments were a drastically different tune from the description of Ms. Blasey Ford's allegations he gave to reporters on Friday.

The president's tone on Ford's testimony stood in sharp contrast to his assessment last week. Voters will cast ballots in November 6 elections in which Democrats are trying to seize control of Congress from Trump's party.

In his own impassioned speech, Kavanaugh denied the claims. Ford's lawyers said on Tuesday she offered full cooperation with the Federal Bureau of Investigation but received no reply.
