But she also seems to be mending the harsh reputation that her host nations have of the Trump administration through her mere enjoyment of the people she's met and the places she's visited.

Her trip has included promoting the work of the US Agency for International Development, a department which has seen its funding cut twice by Donald Trump.

She opened this portion of her visit with a safari in the Nairobi National Park, an activity that allowed her to highlight wildlife conservation efforts in the region.

The First Lady has been criticised for choosing to wear a pith hat while on safari in Kenya, after its connections to colonialism.

Earlier Friday, Mrs. Trump sashayed to the beat of African music while being welcomed to an orphanage.

"Meeting those children and understanding their different way of life is why I wanted to travel here", she said after the school visit, speaking to US embassy workers.

Soon she was petting and stroking the elephants, smiling and laughing and having a good time.

Mrs. Trump's visit includes promoting the work of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the funding of which President Donald Trump has twice proposed slashing by almost a third.

The Trump administration recently made a decision to again allow Americans to import the body parts of African elephants shot for sport.

According to the Associated Press, someone held up a sign reading "Welcome to Malawi".

A half a world away from the spectacle of Washington, the first lady still managed to create one of her own on Friday, riding out into the grassland wearing a crisp white pith helmet - a common symbol of European colonial rule. "They are simply taking advantage of their First Lady's high profile visit in Malawi to speak out so that the media here takes their message along as well", he said. Trump has twice tried unsuccessfully to slash USAID's budget by a third.

"I was happy that she wanted to interact more, I'm happy that she even went ahead and fed an elephant which I did not expect", said Project Manager and Head Keeper Edwin Lusichi.
