He was officially sentenced to three years and one month in prison, but was released because he had already served two years in detention.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has resisted USA demands for Brunson's release, insisting that the courts are independent. USA president Donald Trump said in a tweet on the heels of the news regarding the pastor release, that his thoughts and prayers are with pastor Brunson, hoping "to have him safely back home soon!" "This is the day our family has been praying for - I am delighted to be on my way home to the United States".

Brunson hugged his wife and shed tears of joy as he left the courtroom flanked by an American delegation.

The issue had also been repeatedly highlighted by Vice President Mike Pence and Secretary of State Michael Pompeo, who serve as important links between Trump and his evangelical Christian base.
