Nepal storm kills at least seven climbers on Himalayan mountain, police say

The five South Korean climbers and four Nepalese guides were swept to their deaths when a violent snowstorm triggered a landslide that destroyed their base camp at 11,500ft.

The bodies of the climbers - five South Koreans and four Nepalis - will be flown to Pokhara, a tourist hub that serves as a gateway to the Annapurna region, and then to Kathmandu, said Yogesh Sapkota of Simrik Air, a helicopter company involved in the effort.

A helicopter reached the site and managed to land just above the expedition team's camp, but were unable to retrieve any of the bodies.

Nepali climbing guide Lakma Sherpa, who was assisting another Korean climber, said they were forced to return after the 77-year-old climber fell ill three hours before reaching the base camp on Thursday.

The expedition's camp was totally destroyed by the powerful storm, which hit the area late Thursday or Friday, flattening all the tents and leaving a tangled mess of tarpaulin and broken polls.

Wangchu Sherpa of Trekking Camp Nepal, who organised the expedition, raised the alarm after the firm had not heard from the team for almost 24 hours.

The mountaineers were found dead Saturday near their base camp at an altitude of 35-hundred meters on Mount Gurja in western Nepal.

"After they (the climbers) were out of contact since yesterday, we sent people from the village and a helicopter to search for them", he said.

Gurja was first summited in 1969 by a Japanese team, but no one has stood on its summit for 22 years, according to the Himalayan Database.

The highest peak in the range is the Dhaulagiri I, the seventh highest mountain in the world at 26,795 feet above sea level.
