Mexico seeks assistance from United Nations for migrant caravan

The caravan of thousands of Honduran migrants marching towards the USA dramatically turned around as they reached the Mexican border in Guatemala on Friday morning, a day after hundreds of their comrades faced off with police.

In three tweets directed at Democrats and Central American countries, the president called the loosely organized group of migrants, commonly referred to as a caravan, an "assault on our country by Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador".

If unable to do so I will call up the U.S. Military and CLOSE OUR SOUTHERN BORDER!

He said the caravan includes criminals and he blamed the Democratic Party, claiming they advocate for open borders and weak immigration laws.

But in Mexico, where protesters alreadyhave been marching in support of the approaching Honduran migrants, caving to USA pressure wouldn't play almost as well. Some climbed atop the gate and the US -donated jeeps as they clamoured to be allowed to pass.

Exhausted after tramping in the sun and rain, an advance group of the Honduran migrants on Wednesday took refuge in a church-sponsored shelter in the center of Guatemala City.

Trump's comments came as he has been urging fellow Republicans to make immigration a central issue in the closing weeks of their midterm election campaigns and blaming Democrats for his failure to pass immigration legislation in the GOP-controlled Congress.

"It's not in the interest of anybody to have those people make that trip", Gerónimo Gutiérrez, the Mexican ambassador to the United States, told Fox News, noting that "they're frequently tricked by human smuggling organizations".

"It's a very hard situation for the Mexican government", says Ana Maria Salazar, a former Pentagon official who's now a security analyst in Mexico City.

The Mexican government will ask the United Nations refugee agency, UNHCR, for help in coordinating an overflowing wave of refugees arriving from on its southern border from Central American countries.

Kolken says criminals sometimes embed themselves in migrant caravans and target unsuspecting individuals.

The Associated Press reports that many migrants do not have passports and have been using national ID cards, which allow them to travel within Central America. Obrador is scheduled to take office on December 1, 2018.

Manelich Castilla tells Milenio TV it is part of their plan to process the 3,000 some migrants who are trying to enter Mexico from Guatemala.

"Honestly, I want to get to the states to contribute to that country, to do any kind of work, picking up garbage", he said.

On Thursday, Mexico's ambassador to Guatemala, Luis Manuel Lopez Moreno, met with migrants camped out on the border to try to discourage them from crossing illegally.
