Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge has written a letter to the Prime Minister stating that the CBI director can not be touched until the selection committee is taken in confidence.

A late night order on Tuesday from the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent Verma and Asthana on leave. The Delhi High Court has given former CBI Director Alok Verma time till Monday, October 29 to respond to the allegations against Asthana. The CBI had filed an FIR against Asthana for allegedly accepting a bribe from a businessman, who was related to Moin Akhtar Qureshi case.

Meanwhile, the government has appointed M Nageswar Rao as the new interim chief, who replaces Verma. The presence of their men outside the directors house is likely to generate a political storm as opposition political parties are watching the developments closely and accusing the government of interference in the law enforcement agencies. This is to secure independence of the CBI and this has been violated by the present order. The top court has scheduled the hearing of his plea for Friday.
