Stabbed, 1 Dead In Australia In Incident Police Say Is Possible Terrorism

The driver of a pickup truck loaded with gas canisters stabbed three people in a Melbourne street on Friday, killing one of them in what Australian police are treating as an act of terrorism.

Law enforcement officers responding to a vehicle fire in the city's central business district were "confronted by a male brandishing a knife and threatening them", Victoria police superintendent David Clayton told reporters Friday.

Victoria Police said officers "initially responded to a report of a vehicle on fire" in the city centre at around 4:20pm local time, as people began to leave work for the weekend.

Ambulance Victoria said three people were injured at the scene, including one person who suffered a neck injury and is in a suspected critical condition. He declined to identify the attacker, but said he was Somali with "family associations that are well known to us".

Superintendent David Clayton said investigators are "keeping an open mind" and there was "no known link to terrorism at this stage".

Victoria Police Commissioner Graham Ashton said security arrangements across the region as well as other public events, are being reassessed.

In total, three people were stabbed and one died at the scene.

"We ask the public, unless you've got a goal to be here, please avoid the area, we'll provide regular updates through the media in relation to when the area is safe and clear", he said.

Islamic State has claimed the attack was carried out by one of its members, according to its propaganda agency Amaq.
