Global concerns over prevalence of antibiotic resistance

Pfizer Pakistan recognition of World Antibiotic Awareness Week (WAAW), 12-18 November 2018, reaffirms its commitment to working with industry partners and policymakers to help prevent and combat the global public health threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

New research has found more Australians are becoming aware of antibiotic resistance and its serious threat to their health, and the health of their family and community-but there is further work to be done to reduce the impact of this global problem, according to NPS MedicineWise, the lead organisation for quality use of medicines in Australia.

She said using an antibiotic when it's not needed can cause you to have resistance to it over time and that they're only good for bacterial infections. You should support only producers that do not routinely use antibiotics to raise animals, or restaurants that only source from these responsible producers.

"The GHA notes the findings of the World Health Organization report in which Gibraltar rates as a high antibiotic user compared to most European Union jurisdictions", a GHA spokesman said. These antimicrobials are used to treat common infections.

"Everyone has a part to play in reducing antibiotic resistance". Repeated and reckless use of antibiotics gives rise to drug-resistant bacteria.

Moeti stated that patients should never demand nor share antibiotics and only use them when prescribed by a certified healthcare professional. Antibiotics do not have any effect on viruses, such as colds and flu, yet more than a third (37%) of those surveyed wrongly say antibiotics are effective for treating viral infections. New resistance mechanisms in bacteria are emerging and spreading globally, threatening our ability to treat common infectious diseases.

"Reserve" group antibiotics, which should only be used as last-resort antibiotics for treatment of specific infections caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria, account for less than 2% of total antibiotic consumption in most high-income countries and were not reported by most low- and middle-income countries. Washing your hands regularly with soap and running water can help you stay healthy, and can prevent the spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Now is the time not just for building awareness, but for you to take meaningful action to protect yourself and your loved ones from these "superbugs".

'The timeframe for developing a new antibiotic is 10-15 years and it's not very profitable for companies as antibiotics tend to only be used for short courses. Some 83% of those surveyed believe pharmaceutical companies should develop more antibiotics.

"Africa lacks data on the scope and scale of antibiotic resistance". In 2018 alone, the Pork Checkoff funded almost $400,000 across multiple research areas to evaluate antibiotic alternatives and other methods to minimise on-farm antibiotic use. Besides focusing on awareness about the consequences of irrational use of antibiotics, greater investment is required on promotion of health and public health infrastructure to minimise the need for antibiotics use.
