Pakistan condoles death of ex-US President H.W. Bush

Former President George H.W. Bush died Friday evening at the age of 94.

His presidency, which ran from 1989 to 1993, was defined by two events - his aggressive response to Iraqi President Saddam Hussein's invasion of Kuwait in 1990, and the soon-to-be-broken "read my lips" pledge he made not to raise taxes while running for president in 1988.

Mr. Bush had also been a World War II hero, Texas congressman, Central Intelligence Agency director, and Ronald Reagan's vice president.

Former prime minister Tony Blair said: "President Bush was an extraordinary and exemplary public servant, a man dedicated to his country, the values it stands for at its best and to making the world better, more stable and more peaceful".

His life in public service included an appointment as USA ambassador to the United Nations, chairman of the Republican National Committee and director of the Central Intelligence Agency.

Former prime minister Bob Hawke also paid tribute, saying "George Bush was a good friend of mine whom I admired as a man of decency and charm, an outstanding president in a hard era".

"As president, he set the stage for the decades of prosperity that have followed".

In 2001, Bush became just the second USA president after John Adams to see his son become president. We happened to work together in years of great changes.

This fantasy was indeed the life and times of "Poppy" Bush, a man of boundless energy, a restless spirit, irrepressible even when illness struck late in life. Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course, McGrath said.

The Russian president noted that as head of the USA during one of the most important stages of world history, George HW Bush "has expressed political wisdom and foresight, strove to make informed decisions even in the most hard situations".

After graduation Bush embarked on a career in the oil industry of West Texas. "We are grateful for his commitment to patriotism and public service". Before that, he served for eight years as Vice-President under Ronald Reagan.

He worked with Carter, Clinton, Obama and son George to raise money for hurricane victims in Texas in 2017.

Iran state television has noted his death as being "like other USA presidents who wished to see the collapse of the Islamic Republic".

"He was truly a gentleman of American politics and one of the world's most principled defenders of freedom and democracy", Scheer said in a statement.
