Labour MP in Brexit Mace protest ‘acted on spur of the moment’

Acting Scottish Conservative leader Jackson Carlaw echoed the remarks of his party colleague Mr Mundell.

He warned "nothing has changed" with her Brexit deal despite her "little journey" meeting European Union leaders.

Lib Dem leader Sir Vince Cable said the United Kingdom government was doing plenty of planning for a no-deal Brexit, which it did not want but thought possible, but "no planning appears to be taking place for a people's vote which we believe is highly probable".

"It cannot be right that the Government can unilaterally alter the arrangements, once this House has agreed on a timetable, without the House being given the opportunity to express its will".

"If Labour, as official opposition, lodges motion of no confidence in this incompetent government tomorrow, [the SNP] will support & we can then work together to give people the chance to stop Brexit in another vote".

Some within the Labour Party also believe their political enemies want the party to table a vote, only to lose it, weakening Mr Corbyn in the process and pushing the party closer to backing a second referendum.

Labour insiders know they can't win a no-confidence vote unless they have the DUP on side, and while the prime minister is racing around Europe trying to win concessions on the Northern Irish backstop they're holding their fire.

The Aberavon MP Stephen Kinnock has also called for an immediate no confidence vote. He says "the government has lost control of events and is in complete disarray".

This may seem unusual, given Jeremy Corbyn is happy to confirm at every opportunity that he would like to fight a general election.

"Isn't it completely contrary to the national interest for the prime minister to run down another six weeks on the clock - when all she is seeking is reassurances and clarification on a document Parliament already understands?"

Earlier today, Jeremy Corbyn blasted Theresa May's decision to delay the key Brexit vote stating that "We don't have a functioning government".

"What is the point of democracy if we can not vote?" he said.

She told BBC's Andrew Marr Show: "Once the deal falls, the Prime Minister is under a duty then to set out what she is going to do next".

This can be done by any MP, but at the moment it is Jeremy Corbyn who is being called on to lead the charge.

'I have devoted myself unsparingly since I became Prime Minister. and I stand ready to finish the job, ' she said.
