Wantage MP urges Tories to support Prime Minister Theresa May

She needs to secure the votes of 158 Tory MPs - half the parliamentary party plus one - in a ballot on Wednesday evening to remain as party leader. May's harshest critics supported her remaining leader, arguing a leadership race now would have been too disruptive.

Speaking outside 10 Downing Street, May insisted she would stay the course by contesting the leadership challenge: "I will contest that vote with everything that I have got".

May promised MPs that she would step down as leader before the next election, slated for May 2022.

Speculation about Mr Javid's possible leadership ambitions was fuelled by an interview in the Spectator magazine in which he set out a broad-ranging vision for the Conservatives as the party which can "make a real difference to you as an individual in your life". I would urge all colleagues to get behind her, give her their full support.

She lost her majority after calling a snap election in 2017. Now the PM's own party may sack her.

May also claimed that a new prime minister would mean "delaying or even stopping Brexit" as they would not be installed in time to meet January's legal deadline on negotiations.

"I'm grounded in the real world by the wisdom of business managers in West Berkshire who are deeply concerned about the prospect of no deal", he said.

"I think she needs to win by one", said International Trade Secretary Liam Fox.

The prime minister spoke to the DUP leader, Arlene Foster, and the party's Brexit spokesman, Nigel Dodds, on Wednesday afternoon.

A challenge was triggered after 15 per cent of the Conservative members of parliament (MPs) wrote letters demanding a confidence vote to the chairman of the party's "1922 Committee", which represents those lawmakers who have no government jobs.

Enough Tory MPs have requested a vote of confidence in Theresa May to trigger a contest which will take place tonight.

If several candidates come forward, a secret vote is held among Conservative MPs to whittle down the field.

The European Parliament's Brexit point man, Guy Verhofstadt, could not contain a note of annoyance, tweeting: "Once again, the fate of EU-U.K. relations, the prosperity of businesses & citizens' rights are consumed by an internal Conservative party catfight over Europe".

I realise that the party would like a different leader to take them into that election.

Lead Brexiteer Jacob Rees-Mogg said May should go to the Queen and tender her resignation.

May also vowed to win the vote triggered by angry Brexit supporters in her Conservative Party on Wednesday, saying her ouster would jeopardize Britain's divorce from the European Union.

Spokesman Rupert Adams said the odds favoured Mrs May from the beginning of the day, and did nothing but improve as the night's vote neared.

May's Conservative party needed 48 letters from MPs to trigger a vote.

Mrs May said changing Conservative leader would "put our country's future at risk and create uncertainty when we can least afford it" and could lead to Brexit being delayed or prevented.

I will be voting for the Prime Minister, Theresa May in the leadership challenge.

"A leadership election risks handing control of the Brexit negotiation to opposition MPs in Parliament", she said. She added that she is close to reaching a new agreement with the European Union and that changing leaders now would jeopardize the process and mean delaying the U.K.'s departure from the European Union, which is supposed to happen on March 29.
