Osaka advances to 4th round at Australian Open

Fourth seed Osaka emerged from an error-strewn 1st set against crafty Latvian Anastasija Sevastova to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

The 2018 US Open champion, targeting back-to-back Grand Slam victories, now trails Svitolina 3-2 in their head to head, having lost both hard-court encounters against the Ukrainian in straight sets a year ago in Dubai and Miami.

Svitolina saved five break points in the marathon game, with the hold giving her the momentum to streak into a second successive Australian quarter final.

The world No.4 trailed a set and 4-1 before rallying to beat the crafty 28th seed 5-7 6-4 6-1 in the third round on Saturday.

Serena Williams faced her first real test at this year's Australian Open and emerged with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 victory over No. 1-ranked Simona Halep to reach the quarterfinals. So Dayana Yastremska, an 18-year-old from Ukraine, found herself wiping away tears as she walked to the net.

Svitolina needed to dig deep to overcome 17th seeded Keys, a US Open finalist in 2017. "I had to rise and put my level up and was very happy I could handle the pressure (serving at) one all in the third set".

The game was nearly as long as the entire second set with Keys crumbling after she failed to take advantage of the numerous break-point chances. And I know that I can challenge good players and I can win.

Naomi Osaka fought her way into the quarter finals of the Australian Open by seeing off Anastasija Sevastova in three sets.

Svitolina was a quarter-finalist at Melbourne Park past year and has made the last eight at Roland Garros twice but is yet to progress further in a Grand Slam.

Because this was a night match, her 16½-month-old daughter, Olympia, couldn't stay up to watch, Williams said, adding: "But we're going to have a fun morning tomorrow" watching films.

Osaka, who faces Latvian 13th seed Anastasija Sevastova next, said she found it hard to settle veteran world number 27 Hsieh's dizzying mix of drop shots and slices. "I definitely think she has figured it out, obviously, in a lot of the other tournaments".

"Ee played a long match, so I'm very pleased that I could get the win today".

Osaka will play sixth seed Elina Svitolina for a place in the semi-finals.

"I wasn't really sure what to do at a point".

But Hsieh pounced as the error-rate crept and the normally softly-spoken Osaka became agitated when she conceded three set points, dropping to her haunches as she tried to regain composure.
