The lead-up to the nominations has been rocky for the film academy.

Spike Lee is finally getting some love at the Oscars, an honour Thor Diakow from Breakfast Television says is much deserved.

Willmott and Lee's screenplay will go up against "A Star is Born", "The Ballad of Buster Scruggs", "Can you Ever Forgive Me?" and "If Beale Street Could Talk" for the Oscar.

Netflix must be celebrating today, with not only "Roma" pulling in 10 nominations but the Coen brothers receiving a nod for penning their anthology western film.

Popular musical romance A Star Is Born and Dick Cheney biopic Vice finished with eight nominations each, while superhero blockbuster Black Panther finished with seven. However, it was a bit shocking-almost offensively so-to see Bradley Cooper missing from that list for A Star Is Born.

Notable absences from the shortlist include British stars Claire Foy for First Man and Emily Blunt for Mary Poppins Returns, as well as Cooper in the directing category.

Thankfully, the Academy backtracked, and wisely awarded Black Panther the nomination.

Between her work in bringing back a beloved childhood character to great praise by critics and audiences alike and her portrayal of a terrified mother grasping to save her family in "A Quiet Place", you'd think Blunt would have been a shoo-in. "End of Sentence.", Marianne Farley earned a live-action nomination for "Marguerite", while Alison Snowden got a nod for her co-directed animated short "Animal Behaviour", as did Domee Shi for "Bao" and Louise Bagnall for her "Late Afternoon".
