DeChambeau unimpressed despite taking 1-shot lead in Dubai

DeChambeau, however, was a massive seven shot victor of the event, justifying his favouritism for the event and that he was the leading world ranked player in the field ahead of the event.

DeChambeau, who is returning to Dubai for the first time since making his debut at the Classic as an amateur in 2016, has won four times in the past nine months on the PGA Tour, and three times in his past eight starts.

"Man, I'm just not 100 percent with my golf game right now", DeChambeau said after his 4-under 68 in the third round, which gave him a one-shot lead over defending champion Li Haotong of China.

"It's obviously a little different to when I won here, the golf course".

"But I'm still in the lead, still got the job done. I just go out and try and dominate the golf course to the best of my ability, and hopefully that will show tomorrow".

Els, whose first of his three Desert Classic wins came 25 year ago in 1994, was under no illusions regarding the task at hand if he is to lift the trophy on Sunday.DeChambeau made two stunning birdies from the desert on the third and the eighth hole in his 66, which also included three bogeys.

The rejuvenated Alvaro Quiros (71) of Spain looked like joining Li in second place, but wound up with a double bogey after hitting his second shot into the water on the 18th hole and was tied fifth at 12-under. "I can't express to you the words how awesome it would be to win on the European Tour".

The 23-year-old gained another stroke on the par-four 16th to turn in 32 before scorching the front nine with four more birdies to move into the outright lead.

When asked how it would feel to defend his crown, Li said: "It would mean a lot".

"I know even while not at my best, I can get it done", DeChambeau said.

"Whether it's air pressure, firmness values, miles per hour on the ball speed, spin rates...we're trying to figure out as much as possible so I can be as consistent as possible and obviously it's showing".
