Bug-spotting teen gets a thank you in Apple’s latest iOS update

At the end of January, videos started circulating on social media about a serious bug in iOS and macOS that allowed users to initiate a Group FaceTime call and listen in on those they were calling without that person answering the call or even knowing that their microphone was activated.

And how can Apple expect people to report security flaws, which have potential negative repurcussions to its dedicated users, if getting the flaws acknowledged requires jumping through hoops and signing up for a developer program, which you very well may have no interest in?

Apple told outlets that a fix would come later that week, but it instead arrived this week, delivering to the iPhone 5s and later, iPad Air and later and the 6th generation iPod touch.

Apple iOS 12.1.4 hit users' devices this afternoon.

German bug hunter Linus Henze said he would not release details of the problem to Apple until it included MacOS in its bounty programme.

Apple has released an iOS and macOS update, which fixes the FaceTime privacy bug that was highlighted last week.

This happened for as long as the call was ringing, and ended when the call was rejected or timed out.

Google's Project Zero security team additionally spotted that the iOS 12.1.4 update addresses a couple of zero-day vulnerabilities that were exploited in the wild.

The delay in responding to the flaw raised questions about Apple's handling of it.

Live Photos won't work unless you update your device as Apple has updated their servers to block the feature from devices not running the latest security update. The two vulnerabilities, known as CVE-2019-7286 and CVE-2019-7287, were related to a "memory corruption issue".

The recommended way to update your devices is to tap Settings General Software Update and carry out the update from there. These will download in the background and install overnight when the device is connected to mains power.
