Schools, Police Issue Warnings About Momo Challenge
Feb 28, 2019, 00:39
Kim Kardashian warned her millions of social media followers on February 27 about the so-called "Momo challenge", which is said to encourage self-harm among children. A video promoting self-harm tips disguised as a popular animated series has continued to resurface on YouTube and YouTube Kids, and several major companies pulled advertising after a blogger described "a wormhole into a soft-core pedophilia ring" on the site.
"When my friends or my family ask kids about it they immediately were like, 'how do you know about it and then ran to them and cried, '" Jessica said. These things are real, and they do happen.
Lyn Dixon of Edinburgh, Scotland, told Daily Express her 8-year-old son was searching through YouTube recently when the infamous "Momo" figure splashed across his screen.
"I explained to them that the Momo Challenge encourages children to carry out pranks and risky actions which could make them be at real risk". Part of the reason why is that the game tells kids if they inform their parents about it, harm could be inflicted on them or their parents.
Parents must act if they hear the above video playing through their children's electronic devices. The origin of the challenge is unclear, if it is indeed true, and many people believe that it's a hoax.
"Another video clip is going by the name of "MoMo" which shows a warped white mask which is promoting children to do risky tasks without telling their parents".
The Ash Field Academy in Leicester, England, also wrote a warning. School districts in Utah and New Jersey also recently warned parents about the "Momo Challenge".
As for the disturbing Momo game, the image has nothing to do with it, but it's a sculpture by a Japanese artist, Keisuke Aisawa, the CBS report noted.
A YouTube spokesperson has since addressed the deadly trend, writing, "Our Community Guidelines prohibit harmful and unsafe challenges, including promoting the Momo challenge, and we remove this content quickly when flagged to us".
The Momo challenge is eerily similar to the "Blue Whale" challenge, which gained popularity in 2017 and allegedly led to the deaths of two teenagers in the USA, as well as others in Russia, Brazil and a half dozen other countries.
