Trump Vows to Sign Executive Order Requiring Colleges to ‘Support Free Speech’

President Trump capped a tumultuous week by reveling in the embrace of conservative activists Saturday, deriding investigations of him, repeatedly complaining about coverage of his crowd sizes, and abruptly announcing an executive order to mandate protection of free speech on college campuses.

The announcement, during Trump's address to the conservative conference CPAC, appeared to target complaints by some university critics that institutions of higher education stifle right-wing viewpoints.

With the Mueller investigation reportedly coming to an end, Trump criticized the probe as a "collusion delusion" and said that political foes were trying to take him out with "bullshit". "And if they don't it will be very costly".

Trump said the attack was "disgusting" and joked that, for the benefit of the media, he wouldn't wish similar treatment on the assailant.

"We believe in the American dream, not in the socialist nightmare", he said to boisterous applause from hundreds of supporters at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) near Washington.

It barely registered with lawmakers during disgraced lawyer Michael Cohen's dramatic congressional testimony Wednesday about President Donald Trump's alleged misdeeds throughout the 2016 presidential campaign and his first year in office. University of California, Berkeley police arrested a suspect, Zachary Greenberg, on Friday. Then he quipped, "I was going to call him, but I don't have to now". Smollett had tried to frame supporters of President Donald Trump by claiming the attackers referenced Trump's campaign slogan "Make America Great Again".

Williams, who was recruiting for the right-wing student group Turning Point on Berkeley's main plaza on February 19, was accosted by two men who were upset with a sign referencing the harm of hate crime hoaxes in the wake of the Jussie Smollett case.

"Robert Mueller never received a vote and neither did the person who appointed him", Trump continued, as he attempted to portray Mueller's team as a group of the "angriest Democrats".

Williams, who had a black eye, told Fox News that the men objected to a sign that said 'Hate Crime Hoaxes Hurt Real Victims'.

But Warner made it clear that he's seriously concerned about a possible link between the Russians and Trump's allies and campaign apparatus."I'm going to reserve judgment until I'm finished, but there's no one who can factually say there isn't plenty of evidence of collaboration or communication between the Trump Organization and Russians", Warner said.

According to Georgetown University's Free Speech Tracker, which evaluated more than 90 incidents of attempted free speech suppression, roughly two-thirds of which occurred at colleges, there were "many incidents, generally less well-publicized, where lower-profile scholars, speakers, or students who could be considered to be on the left have been silenced or shut down".
