MSNBC panel deflects Rep. Ilhan Omar anti-Semitism criticism, blames Trump instead

After news broke of Democrats planning to vote on a resolution condemning anti-Semitism in response to Omar, and later adding language condemning anti-Muslim bias as well, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D., Md.) said there may be no vote on one at all.

The remarks have exploded into a larger debate over how Congress should respond to individual racial and religious grievances.

The chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee said on Tuesday that he will not eject Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) from the committee over her latest anti-Semitic remarks. The resolution is not expected to call out Omar by name.

The poster with a picture of the twin towers burning and Omar's face in front of it, said: "I am the proof you have forgotten". There are no accounts of anyone trying to spin what she said about Israel supporters pledging allegiance to a foreign country as having been more innocuous than it first appeared. The alternative is scarier, that they either agree with Omar on the merits or see enough support for her views among their own constituents that they feel obliged to try to defeat a resolution aimed at her. To take it further, they're not backing down and changing the resolution to a fatuous "hate is bad" word gloop because they've had second thoughts about Omar-they're doing it because they got hit with pressure from the other side, which they weren't expecting, and they don't want that fight either! "But I would like to see Nancy Pelosi stand strong, especially as speaker".

It's not entirely surprising that Pelosi would take such a stance; when asked about the preparation of a resolution in the House condemning anti-Semitism that was supposed to be initiated on Wednesday, Pelosi acknowledged that she didn't know precisely when it would be finished. We have said that before. Initially the measure targeted only anti-Semitism, with some Democrats pushing for a direct rebuke of Omar, but by Tuesday night - facing backlash from members not on board with the plan - leaders chose to expand it to include anti-Muslim bias. The four-page measure, drafted by Pelosi, Engel, Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., and Rep. Ted Deutch, D-Fla., details the history and recent rise of anti-Semitism in the USA and does not call out Omar by name. "It doesn't start with one member out of 435 members of Congress".

"It's the 21st century, and the fact that we have to put a resolution on the floor and spell out for people what anti-Semitism means is pretty outrageous", said Florida Democratic Rep.

Rep. Ted Deutch (D-Fla.), who is among the Jewish members involved in crafting the initial resolution, rose to defend the resolution and, according to one member present, grew emotional. Rep. Colin Allred (D-Texas) said he disagreed with what Omar said and believed "there should be an apology", according to The Hill. To question someone's loyalty because they're Jewish, I think, is bad. In 2012, she said Israel has hypnotized the world, earlier this year her "all about the Benjamins" tweet regarding AIPAC contributions prompted her to issue a sort-of-apology, but these recent remarks, in which the dual loyalty slur was insinuated, she's not backing down from, which prompted this upcoming House resolution that indirectly targeted her. "It's something that we shouldn't question at all".
