Tesla will upgrade Superchargers to faster V3

Unveiled on Wednesday, the carmaker said in a blog post that the new V3 Supercharger will boast charging rates of up to 250 kW. Tesla says that "a$3 t this rate, a Model 3 Long Range operating at peak efficiency can recover up to 75 miles of charge in 5 minutes and charge at rates of up to 1,000 miles per hour".

Once update, if the Tesla auto owner is on its way to the nearest Supercharger stations, the vehicle will intelligently heat the battery.

Supercharging V3 isn't as quick as CEO Elon Musk suggested when he called the 350 kw peak of CCS charging at the time "a children's toy".

Tesla yesterday opened its first "public beta" V3 charging site in Fremont, California.

V3 Supercharging is based on a new 1MW power cabinet, which supports peak rates of up to 250kW per vehicle, up from earlier 120kW. "This combination of higher peak power and dedicated vehicle power allocation across the site enables you to charge in half the time", Tesla wrote. It includes entirely new hardware, including grid-connected batteries to act as a buffer to stabilize electrical loads (and reduce demand charges from utilities). When an owner navigates to a charging station, their auto will make sure the battery is raised to an optimal temperature when they arrive which Tesla says can reduce average charge times by 25 percent.

In the coming weeks, over 12,000 existing V2 Superchargers will get 145kW charge rates, up from 120kW.

This is good news for Tesla owners, but also for Tesla's network because it means cars will spend on average 50 percent less time recharging, meaning every Supercharging location can handle more cars every day. Owners of Models S and X will have to wait for software updates in the coming months before being able to benefit from these 250kW stations.

The V3 Superchargers will come to USA sites in Q2 and Q3 this year, with Asia-Pacific and Europe to follow in Q4. The company says that thousands of new Superchargers will come online in 2019; it doesn't stipulate that all of these will be V3 Superchargers, but it would be unlike Tesla not to deliver its most advanced version.
