Outspoken lawyer Michael Avenatti charged with trying to extort Nike

Avenatti, who previously represented Stormy Daniels and Brett Kavanaugh accuser Julie Swetnick, allegedly threatened to bring negative publicity to Nike if his demands were not met, the SDNY said.

Donald Trump Jr. wrote a series of tweets including: '#MAGA - Michael Avenatti Getting Arrested!'

Avenatti was arrested in NY on separate federal charges.

Spokesperson Ciaran McEvoy says the lawyer best known for representing porn actress Stormy Daniels in lawsuits against President Donald Trump faces federal charges in NY and California.

Shortly before the charges came to light, Avenatti tweeted that he planned to hold another news conference regarding Nike on Tuesday morning.

"He's essentially accused of threatening to affect Nike's capital value unless some money was paid", Dershowitz said, adding that Avenatti tends to be "a guy with a big mouth, using words that reasonable lawyers would never use in a conversation".

High-profile attorney Mark Geragos-who has represented the likes of Colin Kaepernick, Jussie Smollett, and the late singer Michael Jackson-was named as a co-conspirator to attorney Michael Avenatti after he was arrested in Manhattan for allegedly trying to extort millions from Nike, according to the Wall Street Journal.

If convicted on both charges, Avenatti would face up to 50 years in federal prison.

Avenatti was to appear in court in New York City before Magistrate Judge Katharine H. Parker.

R Kelly was recently arrested on multiple sexual miscoduct charges before being released on bail and lawyer Michael Avenatti revealed he was in possession of a number of videos that he claimed showed R Kelly engaging in sexual acts with a child. He was arrested Monday, prosecutors said.

Avenatti and Nike did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Authorities indicted and arrested Avenatti Monday in NY on charges of wire fraud, bank fraud and attempting to extort $20 million from Nike Inc.

United States prosecutors have charged high-profile lawyer Michael Avenatti with attempting to extort more than US$20 million (A$28 million) from sportswear giant Nike. He also allegedly used fake tax returns to get a $4.1 million loan from a MS bank to fund his law firm and coffee business.

The Manhattan US Attorney's office said it would hold a press conference to discuss the charges on Monday afternoon. "I believe we can not be the party of turning the other cheek", Avenatti told an audience at an event for his pre-presidential campaign tour (or whatever it was).

While in Mississippi, Avenatti is accused of submitting false tax information in order to secure loans.
