"I rise today to consider the Green New Deal with the seriousness it deserves", Lee said, just hours before the proposal from Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a Democrat from NY, and Senator Edward Markey, a Democrat from MA, failed in the Senate, with all Republicans and four Democrats blocking the measure, The Washington Post's Dino Grandoni and Felicia Sonmez reported.

Prior to the Green New Deal hearing Tuesday, Markey repeatedly said Republicans would try to make a "mockery" of the proposal to "sabotage" the larger debate about how to address climate change. That left the final vote at 57-0 against the resolution, with 43 members voting present.

King, who caucuses with Democrats, joined three other Democrats who voted with the Republican majority.

In a vote Democrats said was political showboating by Republicans-and one that Republicans said gave Democrats the chance to go on record with their support-the measure on Tuesday failed to advance in the Senate after Democrats voted "present" and Republicans voted against it. Lamar Alexander said on the Senate floor Monday. "This is about our constituents and all of our lives", said Ocasio-Cortez.

The same Democrats tried to justify their lack of affirmative votes by making excuses about the process being rushed, and lacking customary hearings and procedures.

McConnell had called the proposal "a radical, top-down, socialist makeover of the entire USA economy".

Republicans on Capitol Hill have also seized on a series of talking points Ocasio-Cortez's office accidentally circulated about the resolution that included financial support for Americans "unwilling to work" and for policies like building out high-speed rail so "air travel stops becoming necessary". "I've never seen a bill sponsored by a dozen people who don't want to vote on it", he said.

Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, called the Green New Deal "ridiculous" and displayed pictures of dinosaurs, cartoon characters and babies as he derided the plan.

Lee's remarks enraged Democrats, who called climate change deadly serious, citing floods in the Midwest, wildfires in the West and hurricanes in the South.

Ocasio-Cortez, who in January suggested implementing an income tax rate of up to 70 percent on wealthy Americans to pay for the plan, said the environmental costs to Americans are coming. The New York Post notes he introduced it to vote against it. It's unclear what version of the Deal the Senate voted on, however, as the text of the resolution disappeared from Ocasio-Cortez's website over a month ago after certain provisions sparked media outcry.

Though Lee acknowledged that he would likely be met with criticism for "not taking climate change seriously", the rest of his argument against the Green New Deal continued in a similar vein - full of sarcasm and accompanying posters.

"Does anyone really believe that US Senators care how a freshman rep tells them to vote?"

"Democrats are on offense" about climate change, Schumer said as he announced a Democrat-only committee on climate.

Following the disastrous vote for Ocasio-Cortez, the young socialist took to Twitter to try to save face, declaring that she told her Democratic colleagues to not vote for the proposal.
