Trump says '100%' ready to shut down Mexico border

It's perhaps the most weird move in two years of relentlessly erratic and freaky behavior by Trump, and he is indeed now threatening to flat-out close the southern border of the United States with Mexico. "I am not kidding around", the president said then, plainly exasperated by the migrant flow.

The President added that he's "totally prepared" to close the southern border, "or we're going to close large sections of it" despite economic consequences. But White House aides insist it's a real possibility. He added that his posturing was "the only way we're getting a response".

Senior US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officials said on Tuesday a recent redeployment of some 750 officers on the border to deal with a surge in migrants - mostly Central American families turning themselves into border agents - had already led to a slowing of legal crossings and commerce at ports of entry.

"The question is: Can we deal with that, and not have economic damage?"

"The truth is the Democratic party is the open border party", Gingrich said.

In 2018, the U.S. imported $346.5 billion worth of goods from Mexico, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau. The president's remarks stood in contrast with those of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, who has thanked Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador for their efforts to help the United States secure the border. Some consumers said they would be willing to pay extra for US -grown produce, but the reality is not everyone would be able to afford the necessary fruits and vegetables for a healthy lifestyle. One auto industry analyst estimates that a shut down could halt auto production in most US factories within a week.

Those two consequences-one purely cosmetic, the other deeply devestating-do a pretty good job of summing up the importance of cross-border trade between the USA and Mexico.

Sanders claimed the southern border is being overrun and the president could be forced to close it.

Responding to Trump's threats, Nielsen rushed home late Monday night from Europe, where she was attending G7 security meetings and meant to fly to the border mid-week to assess the impact of changes already made, including reassigning some 2,000 border officers assigned to check vehicles to deal with migrant crowds and new efforts to return more asylum seekers to Mexico as they wait out their case.

Trump has threatened several times to close down the border, which would choke the flow of people and goods between the two countries, dampening trade.

'Closing the U.S. -Mexico border would inflict severe economic harm on American families, workers, farmers, and manufacturers across the United States. The global integration of the world capitalist economy is nowhere more evident than on the US-Mexican border.

SCOTT HORSLEY, BYLINE: Retailers in San Diego got a small taste of what a border shutdown might look like last November, when members of a migrant caravan charged the border and US officials closed one border crossing in response.
