Turkey says USA failed to report true content of Pompeo talks

"It's a done deal", Çavuşoğlu said during the "NATO Engages" event in Washington, D.C., to mark the alliance's 70th anniversary.

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan has refused to back down from Ankara's planned purchase of a Russian S-400 missile defense system that the United States has said would compromise the security of the F-35, the most advanced US fighter aircraft.

Other U.S. officials have stopped short of threatening Turkey's underlying relationship with America or North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, but there have been growing calls for swift action, including sanctions, against Ankara to stop the S-400 purchase.

Germany was the only country out of these major powers to say they were more unwilling than willing to defend the US, 43 per cent to 32 per cent; by contrast, 54 per cent of Americans think they should defend Germany should she find herself attacked by Russian Federation.

Turkey will not turn back from a major arms deal with Russian Federation despite the U.S. suspension of Ankara from the F-35 fighter-jet programme, Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Wednesday.

The US said on Monday that it was halting shipment of F-35 parts to Turkey as well as joint manufacturing work due to Ankara's purchase of the S-400 missile defence system from Russian Federation.

US President Donald Trump admitted that the previous US administration headed by Barack Obama had made a mistake not selling the Patriot surface-to-air missile system to Turkey, Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said in Washington on Wednesday. Washington has sought to persuade Turkey to purchase the Patriot defense system, instead of S-400s.

"Should Turkey procure the S-400", acting chief Pentagon spokesperson Charles Summers says in his announcement suspending deliveries to stand-up the program in Turkey, "their continued participation in the F-35 program is at risk".

The United States has already suspended all F-35 shipments to Turkey as a result of the conflict.

"We will agree on new measures of support for our close partners Georgia and Ukraine", NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg told reporters ahead of Thursday's session.

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence has warned Turkey and Germany about their dealings with Russian Federation, telling Ankara it is "reckless" and warning Berlin it risks becoming a "captive" of Moscow.

"Turkey must choose - does it want to remain a critical partner of the most successful military alliance in the history of the world, or does it want to risk the security of that partnership by making reckless decisions that undermine our alliance?"

During a visit to the air base, Turkey's two F-35s were visible, each with a Turkish flag painted on its tail.

Turkish President Recep Tayip Erdogan is showing no signs of yielding to the United States. Sources familiar with the F-35's intricate worldwide production process and the U.S. thinking on the issue last week said Turkey's role can be replaced. "This is not a choice for us", he said.
