NASA head Jim Bridenstine criticized India for the weapon test stating that NASA had identified 400 pieces of orbital debris and was tracking 60 pieces that are larger than 10cm in diameter.

The DRDO chief also said that the interceptor missile used in "Mission Shakti" has a range of more than 1000km but the interception was deliberately done at a range of 283km to ensure the safety of space assets.

Elaborating further about the A-Sat test conducted on March 27, he said, "The interceptor that has been used for this goal is a three stage vehicle with two stages of solid propellant and then a kill vehicle".

The major challenges in the mission were to achieve "hit to kill" against a live satellite with an accuracy with less than 10 cm.

The Indian satellite was destroyed at a relatively low altitude of 300 kilometres -120 kilometres below the ISS and most orbiting satellites.

Addressing the mediapersons, Reddy also said, "For a similar application we don't need another test".

Decisions on the weaponisation of space would be taken by the government, Reddy said.

"An orbit of around 300 km was chosen for the test for capability demonstration".

He further added, "Look at the nations who have conducted such test, USA, China, they all are coming into public view because the satellite is tracked by many stations across the world". "We have demonstrated that". "From our simulation, we can very clearly say that the possibilities of (debris) hitting the ISS are not there", Reddy said.

Nearly all the technologies used for the ASAT test were indigenously developed with some 50 industries contributing components for the 13 metre missiles weighing 19 tonnes.

Cleaning up space is the mission of a new Swiss start-up, ClearSpace, which will capitalise on technology developed by engineers at The Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL).

These includes about 10,000 pieces of space debris, of which almost 3,000 were created by a Chinese anti-satellite test. Some 150 scientists worked round-the-clock and some 2,000 components were sourced from 50 private industries.

India said on Saturday it is looking to play a role in drafting worldwide laws on different aspects of outer space as a major space faring nation with proven technology such as ground-based direct hit deterrence capability.
