Omaha Beach scratched from Derby 145

Omaha Beach won his past three starts, including the Arkansas Derby, while ridden by last year's Triple Crown winning jockey, Mike Smith.

Epiglottis: A triangular-shaped cartilage that lies at the base of the airway just in front of the arytenoid cartilages which cover the airway during swallowing.

Omaha Beach had breezed impressively over the Churchill Downs track for a week, including a stout five-furlong workout over the weekend. Bodemeister, at 30-1, will replace Omaha Beach. All three are entered by Bob Baffert, who past year became only the second trainer in history to saddle more than one Triple Crown victor when Justify completed the rare sweep of the Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes.

Omaha Beach, the favorite for Saturday's Kentucky Derby, has been scratched, his trainer Richard Mandella confirmed to Churchill Downs on Wednesday afternoon.

"I'm all in with Flo", he said. The ordeal will knock him off the Triple Crown trail. Morning line favorite. Different race now.

"It's been a devastating thing, but we have to do what's right for the horse", said Mandella, who has never won the Derby.

Omaha Beach galloped Wednesday morning without any problem. Baffert, who is looking to tie trainer Ben Jones for most wins in Kentucky Derby history, even called Omaha Beach the "horse to beat".

The first leg of horse racing's Triple Crown is only a few days away, and post positions were drawn for the 20 horses in the field on Tuesday.

Omaha Beach's scratch moves Bodexpress into the field in the No. 20 post.
