Google allows Huawei to keep using Android until August

The Trump administration insists the sanctions are unrelated to its escalating trade war with China, and many analysts see it as aimed at pressuring USA allies in Europe to accede to Washington's entreaties to exclude Huawei equipment from their next-generation wireless networks, known as 5G.

Yesterday, the Commerce Department granted Huawei a license buy USA goods until August 19 to maintain existing telecoms networks and provide software updates to Huawei smartphones.

Huawei is said to have stockpiled enough chips and other vital components to keep its business running for at least three months.

On Sunday, Reuters reported citing a person familiar with the matter that Alphabet Inc's Google suspended business with Huawei that requires the transfer of technical service, hardware and software except what is publicly available via open-source licensing. "We will continue to build a safe and sustainable software ecosystem, in order to provide the best experience for all users globally", they said.

The Commerce Department said it will evaluate whether to extend the license period beyond 90 days.

That move by Google was a result of the Trump administration's addition of Huawei to a trade blacklist that restricts its ability to do business with USA companies.

According to a report by the Chinese magazine Caijing, Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei Consumer Business Group, has revealed details about the Huawei operating system.

Adding to its US troubles on Thursday, the US Commerce Department placed Huawei and 68 entities to an export blacklist, making it almost impossible for those listed to purchase goods made in the United States. Huawei phones outside China have used a version of Android that comes with a package of Google services, including search, Maps, YouTube and - crucially - the Play store for downloading a range of apps.

As a result, Google revoked Huawei's Android license.

The company has been working on a backup operating system since 2012 and now we know a little more about it.

American officials say Huawei and other Chinese telecom equipment vendors are a security risk because they beholden to the ruling Communist Party.

Huawei launched its new Honor 20 series smartphones in London on Tuesday in a presentation that emphasized the Chinese company's technology but made no reference of a possible rupture with Google.

Almost 16 per cent of Huawei's expenditure on components a year ago went to United States firms including Qualcomm Inc, Intel Corp and Micron Technology Inc, analysts said. Asked how long Huawei may face hard times, Ren said: "You may need to ask Trump about this question, not me".

"The longer-term effect is that Huawei and other Chinese companies turn away more sharply from American suppliers".

The United States is delaying restrictions on US technology sales to Chinese tech powerhouse Huawei in what it calls an effort to ease the blow on owners of its cellphones and smaller USA telecoms providers that rely on its networking equipment.
