Travel advisory: Chennai hotels facing water shortage due to delayed monsoon

This comes after the Tamil Nadu government vehemently stated that there is no water scarcity in the city and that the media was creating and "illusion of scarcity". "We have over 400 water tanks distributing water in the state", Tamil Nadu minister D Jayakumar had said. While thanking the Pinarayi Vijayan government for the gesture, Palaniswami Friday said that a one-time supply of water will not be enough.

Kerala was prepared to transport 20 lakh litres of drinking water from Thiruvananthapuram to Chennai through train, the release added. The state government also received flak after it reportedly turned down an offer from Kerala on Thursday to supply water to Chennai's residents.

Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board has been allocated Rs 158.42 crore for water distribution here, he said. "The proper rain to fill up the reservoirs isn't expected until November". Speaking at an event in Vellore, Duraimurugan said that if the government takes water from Vellore, then there would be massive protests in the district.

"When we go to streets and restaurants, they don't have water, they have some contaminated water which will be given for handwash which is not really hygienic".

The protest was held to urge the CCCO to take steps to resolve the water crisis affecting the state.

Shreya Tater, a resident of Vyasarpadi from Chennai said, "From last one month the water crisis has gone up and we are bound to get water from private water tankers".

The situation in Chennai reflects an ongoing nationwide crisis as a fatal heat wave sweeps across the country, and cities from Mumbai to Delhi face dwindling water supplies.

While the middle class can just about manage to pay the inflated prices now being charged by private water-tanker companies, that option is not open to the poor.

Chennai's metro system has stopped using its cooling water-reliant air conditioning at stations, businesses such as restaurants have had to close, and some workers have been told to work from home so as to conserve water in offices.

Here's the difficulty in India's sixth most exciting metropolis after its four reservoirs ran dry this week.

Even the High Court yesterday came down firmly on the TN Government for its failure to tackle the water scarcity.

The floor of the Chembarambakkam reservoir is cracked open, dry and sun-baked.

The shortage of water has hit IT companies, five-star hotels and high-rise residential buildings. "He should extend cooperation to us to receive water from the monsoon", he said and pointed out that the livelihood of people in five districts - Madurai, Theni, Dindigul, Ramanathapuram and Sivaganga - was dependent on water from Mullaperiyar.

Meanwhile, the status report has exposed lack of preparedness on the state government's part to handle the water crisis. "If we already have water problems now, how am I going to make sure that she has water to drink tomorrow?"
