Trump Invites Kim Jong Un to Meet Him at Korean Border

United States president Donald Trump has invited North Korea's Kim Jong Un to shake hands at the Korean demilitarised zone (DMZ).

Mr Trump is scheduled to visit South Korea later on Saturday after meetings at the G20 in Osaka, Japan.

He tweeted on Friday: "While there, if Chairman Kim of North Korea sees this, I would meet him at the Border/DMZ just to shake his hand and say Hello?!"

Relations between North Korea and the U.S. have soured since Mr Trump and Mr Kim met in Hanoi, Vietnam in February.

Talks have stalled over the details of how to do that and their second summit in late February in Hanoi, Vietnam, ended early without agreement after the United States refused to meet North Korean demands over easing sanctions for interim steps.

Substantive talks between the two nations have largely broken down since then, as the North has balked at Trump's insistence that it give up its weapons before it sees relief from crushing global sanctions.

"President Trump made his pitch for a short summit with Chairman Kim on Twitter as White House officials most likely have tried - and failed - to set up such a meeting through official diplomatic or South Korean channels", Harry J. Kazianis of the Centre for the National Interest said.

Mr Trump, who is in Japan for the G20 Summit, is due to arrive in South Korea later on Saturday.

"We're going there", the president said.

South Korea dominates the women's game globally - and Trump highlighted the success of the country's players when he spoke to its parliament two years ago.

And as well as the 12 cold Korean starters on the official menu - among them steamed sea urchin with tofu, and pan-fried mung beans - mini-hamburgers were served, Blue House officials said. "If in the end, they don't meet, it's good that Trump offered to".

But in yet another reminder of North Korea's continued mistrust of the United States, its foreign ministry said Wednesday it won't surrender to USA -led sanctions and accused Washington of trying to "bring us to our knees". "He may not be in North Korea" Trump told reporters.

Trump has repeatedly touted his warm, friendly relationship with Kim Jong Un, a vicious tyrant who presides over a murderous, totalitarian regime.

Trump described the offer of meeting Kim as a "feeler" and said he came up with the plan "this morning" (Saturday).

Trump flew from Osaka, Japan, where he attended a global summit and held numerous meetings with world leaders, including Russia's Vladimir Putin and China's Xi Jinping. "Nobody's happy about it", the president said.

Mr Trump has previously said publicly he had received a very warm "beautiful letter" from Kim.

It all depends on Kim, it seems, after Trump on Saturday issued a public invitation for a handshake.

"There's no change in our position that we want North Korean-U.S. dialogue to resume", presidential spokeswoman Ko Min-jung said.
