Heavy rain causes flooding and mudslides in southern Japan

"Please take action to protect your lives", Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said on Wednesday, according to Japan Times.

In the city of Kagoshima, where all 590,000 residents were told to evacuate, elderly people and others huddled in shelters to wait out the storm.

Nearly 800,000 people across three Japanese cities have been ordered to evacuate amid warnings of landslides and floods brought by heavy rain.

At 11:10 a.m., the city of Kirishima, also in Kagoshima Prefecture, switched from an evacuation advisory to an evacuation order, targeting 125,000 residents of 61,000 households.

The Japan Meteorological Agency has warned that life-threatening landslides are possible at any time in parts of Kagoshima, adding heavy rain will continue overnight.

A woman in Kagoshima Prefecture was killed this week in another landslide.

Japan's southern city of Kagoshima on Wednesday ordered its almost 600,000 residents to take shelter in evacuation centres and other safe areas as torrential rains threatened landslides and other damage, said public broadcaster NHK.

Kagoshima Gov. Satoshi Mitazono has requested the help of military personnel in the rescue effort.

It said a rainy front is expected to stay over the Japanese archipelago through Saturday, and could also drench eastern Japan.

It was the highest death toll caused by rainfall in Japan since 1982.

Flooding across southern Kyushu has inundated dozens of homes with additional heavy rain over the coming days expected to worsen the current situation.

This might not be the end of flooding problems for Japan as moisture from Tropical Storm Mun may be pulled across the country next Tuesday and Wednesday, bringing another round of torrential rainfall.
